6 February 1941

Arisaig House, Scotland. 11pm.

Charlotte was a light sleeper, so it did not surprise her when she was roused with a jolt from her slumber by the sound of raised voices. It took a moment for Charlotte to adjust to her surroundings. Even after several days in the house, she still had occasions when she woke and could not be sure where she was. She had been woken from a deep dream about running from the Germans, an all too frequent nightmare that came to her most nights. For an instant she was not fully awake and imagined there were Nazis about to break into her room and her heart pounded violently. Then, the very next second, she realised where she was and that such a thing was impossible – well, improbable, unless the invasion of Britain had occurred.

Charlotte’s eyes roved around the bedroom. The shapes of the furniture emerging from the dark. She didn’t put on a light, for she kept the blackout curtains pulled back to allow in the moonlight. She sat up in bed and pricked her ears for the sound that had disturbed her.

“You just left him up there!”

“You were bloody selfish! Doesn’t matter if you guessed it was a trick, you still acted callously! I can’t believe you are still here!”

“This is not about the hillside, this is about the fact you dislike me and want to see me gone from here.”

“I don’t trust you, I never have. You are here only for one reason, because you want to take the British money! You have no intention of doing anything more or putting yourself in danger!”

“You speak lies Silvain!”

“Why say so? I should go to Mr Edwards and tell him what I heard you muttering about the other night. How you meant to betray the British the instant the opportunity arose!”

“You will say nothing!”

“Why not? Why should I let a man like you pass this process, when another more worthy candidate could take your place? You have no intention of working for the British, for all I know you will go to the Gestapo the second you can!”

“You will say nothing! Do you understand? You will not jeopardise this for me!”

Charlotte heard scuffling noises. She sat forward in bed. What was going on? She knew one of the men to be Silvain, but who was the other? And why would Silvain call him a traitor, a very dangerous
